Home Ministry Plans To Reduce the Number of VIPs Receiving Security Cover
The home ministry of India is reportedly geared up to evaluate the list of VIPs who are receiving security cover from the Center. Sources in the ministry reveal that as per the Security Categorisation Committee (SCC), which is controlled by the home secretary, around 24 VIPs who are currently getting security from the government, are likely to have their security covers cut down.
An official from the home ministry states that presently 250 VIPs are receiving security cover from the central government under Z+, X, Y and Z security categories. He adds that the ministry will soon start the procedure of examining this list.
Further, news sources disclose that leaders of the Congress party such as MP Naveen Jindal and ex-steel minister Beni Prasad Verma may have their VIP protection cut down. The security of these two leaders was upgraded during the tenure of home minister Sushilkumar Shinde. It is noteworthy that around 18 names were included in the security list during Sushilkumar Shinde`s term.
Security officers have revealed that assigning guards to safeguard a large number of VIPs prove to be damaging for the resources. In certain cases, CRPF and NSG personnel were made to provide protection to the VIPs. However, this task is not the chief responsibility of such forces.
